"I have my moments."

Fitz enjoys casual physical contact, and so sitting together his his preferred way of talking whatever the mood, and somewhat serious definitely isn't an exception.

"If it's how I do it, I'm not sure I have an answer. I think it's innate, so you're all set."

"You've been very good about not pushing me about Jedao." She actually wonders sometimes if he skirts the subject deliberately. "I wondered if you'd be alright in the same room as him during a party, or if you'd rather avoid that."

It's not what he'd been expecting. Not that Fitz had any specific expectations on what she wanted to talk about, but that's still outside the nebulous field of possibilities that had automatically come up.

"Jedao? You're dating him, right? Or sleeping with him, anyway." He's pretty sure. He thinks she'd probably have mentioned if they'd broken up, though he might be an awkward confident on that score. He hasn't developed any positive feelings about Jedao, though he makes a vague attempt not to mentally refer to him as 'that psychotic bastard' when actually talking with Taura. He's not sure what sort of push might come into it.

"Is it the sort of party where you're supposed to chat on the weather over ridiculously small sandwiches? 'Cause I'd have to packed extra provisions."

"Dating him, going to the same universe he is after the Barge. He and his husband and fiance are family. Jedao told me they'd all still be my family even if I weren't sleeping with him." Which means the world to her. Casual domestic dinners, being lovingly folded into their home whenever she stops by.

"It's my birthday this week, but I don't want to put you in an uncomfortable position."

"So there are benefits and everything." It's good to have people in the universe you're living in, whatever that might be.

He grins at her. "Not going to worry about too small sandwiches, then. Happy early birthday. I'm sure it'll be fine." It's Taura's birthday, that's far more distracting than thinking about people he doesn't like.

Taura pulls Fitz into her lap and ducks her head to kiss him. "Never too small sandwiches. Unless there were a vast sea of them."

But she doesn't drop the subject quite yet. "Are you sure? You don't need to be. I can make arrangements with your feelings in mind. You're worth considering."

"An appealing image, even if you just know they'd only look proper and real end up being all soggy or a bit stale." He still likes imagining a vast sea of finger-sandwiches, on silver trays.

He pushes back his fringe, a little embarrassed. He has no problem complaining, but that's in the face of a universe that's not paying attention. Someone else saying he's worth considering is different. It stops him from just waving off the idea. He doesn't want to make things awkward for her, later. "I can't say I necessarily fancy close proximity."

Taura runs her fingers through Fitz's hair and wraps her other arm snugly around his waist. She tells him, warmly but firmly, "I'll make plans with both of you separately. Let you know once I decide what I'm doing."

He leans into her, happy as always with the contact. "I'll make sure that there's a clear space in my calendar, just for you."

From:

She smiles. "Good. That's all I wanted to ask, but I'm free for a little while if you want company."

From:

"I never say no to your company. So, what day is it?"

From:

Sir.

[Apparently Fitz's new inmate is into minimalist greeting.]

From:

[Fitz would file this under one of the more alarming messages he's received. But then, he doesn't receive a lot of messages from people he doesn't know. It takes him a moment to figure it out.]

You're Dogma, right?

From:

Yes, sir.

From:

You can call me Fitz, if you want. I'm really not military. And this isn't one of those prisons that usually goes in for beatings for perceived informality. [Perhaps not an appropriate joke.

He's only occasionally talked with his temporary inmates, but since Dogma reached out -]

How long have you been here?

From:

Fifty-five days local time, sir.

From:

Right, so still pretty recent.

[He squints at him. There's something familiar there. Probably passing him in the halls or something.]

What do you think?

From:

It feels like a long time to me, sir.

I've tried to keep busy, but my duties are...light.

From:

You still have a breach to go before you get the three rings.

Yeah, it can be an adjustment for people who are used to having more duties or more active schedules. What sort of stuff did you do before?

I was a soldier.

[Past tense.

He wants to ask about the three rings, but isn't bold enough to reveal his ignorance. Maybe he'll ask Fives later.]

And not the type that had to fill a lot of downtime on spaceships?

From:

No, sir. We don't need as much sleep as humans.

[What else would you do with time when not training or dying????]

From:

There's not even as much point in gambling.

[The reasonable time filler that he's noticed in his... brushes with various armies.]

So, would you like to have more stuff to do?

From:

[In a rush of relief.]

Yes please, sir.

I already volunteered for the infirmary but usually it's...empty.
