His plan had always been to go back to the Doctor (well, his plan whenever he believed he was going to get out at all). And once he was back with him - well, if he'd ever forgotten why it was the life he'd chosen he remembers now. That doesn't mean that it's not a bad choice a lot of the time! But it's still a choice.
