Not either, really. I was just into doomed expeditions and the idea of the fragility of man set against the power of nature, and man losing. Captain Scott was another big one.
I mean, I was thirteen, so I can't deny the cannibalism was a plus.
He was a bit after your time, led an expedition to the South Pole around 1910, where everyone died and they were five weeks late from even being the first.
Honestly, that expedition was probably a level of pointless empire dick-measuring that's hard to live up to, but I could enjoy more than one miserable failure.
That's all the discovery service ever was though, 'dick-measuring'. A way to employ the surplus of sailors left over from the wars with Napoleon. I'm surprised more of us didn't perish in spectacularly idiotic ways.
Yeah, I never could get into the war stories. At least some of them were to try to get quicker ways to get places to exploit the people there and take their stuff. Which is... less pointless? Nice and traditionally awful? Maybe it is better to die like an idiot trying to plant a flag in a place where no one lives.
Perhaps, if the dying is contained. That's not the case in the north, but at least we only sullied an ancient Netsilik bear-spirit in our march to our deaths.

[pause.]
You don’t usually murder people, do you?
