He looks even older than that, his nine years lived hard, but even accounting for genetic manipulation, he's still a fresh 18-year-old jarhead at most.
This is just why he dodged National Service. Especially at eighteen, he'd been unable to call anyone 'sir' without heavy sarcasm. He doubts the military would've taken it better than school. Then there's his extreme distaste for every other part of it, especially the bits that can see you dead, but he likes to think there's place for many facets.
"Did you get... satisfaction out of soldiering?" That's not quite the right word, but 'like' doesn't feel right either.
He's not quite naive enough to miss the mockery, and jumps immediately and with gusto to the certainty that he's its target. For a second, two, he glares at Fitz like he wants to kill him.
Despite his repeated claims to holding onto a sensible approach towards life, Fitz has to fight back a nostalgic smile in response to that glare. That's the problem with going so long without people really trying to kill him, even that part of his 'adventures' can sometimes claim a fond light.
Still, he grows more serious again, quickly.
"You know, I've been in some wars where that's absolutely true. The enemy is just as bad as the propaganda, their victory would mean the destruction of everything good in the universe."
"Of course, even with those wars, they provide the perfect opportunity for someone to give a good 'but what if your destroying yourself in the process' speech. And I have to listen to it." He sighs. Getting shot at is still worse, but those speeches are usually followed by getting shot at more.
"Don't doubt it. But I don't want to assume that the noble and ancient art of bitching about work you don't like is truly universal. Cultural assumptions and all that."
"Some one starts talking about the British who lived through the second world war being even more stoic and understanding of sacrifices than usual, you just point 'em in my direction and I can provide plenty of evidence to try to stand in the way of mass generalizations."
"I will definitely do that, sir," he promises fervently. If anyone is saying that many things he has no idea about, he'll be just as happy to have someone to pass them off to.

Unless...what if Fives told him? No, he didn't know Fives. Probably. Probably he doesn't know.
"No, sir."
