"There's time for it here. I think that's pretty much the motto of this place." He leans forward a little, he likes teaching people how to play. "Have you done any other instruments?"
"Oh likely not. I could probably still play Bach if you asked me to," he predicts, trying to pull it back from sheer muscle memory. "Considering that's what I defaulted to when my mother asked what I was working on."
"It's something to do," he tells him. "And it's something I wanted. I might as well, like I said. So yes, we can start from the beginning. This the sort of thing you do? I'm not a very good student." He hasn't tried to do something new in a very long time.
"You want to learn, that's important when it's something like music. Probably in most stuff, really. And a lot of good songs for the guitar don't have the most complicated chord structure or whatever, so the rewards are obtainable quickly enough to help people keep going."
"I suppose I'll need to ask Lark for one of my own." Not that he likes owing the man favors, but this is something he doesn't mind. And he doesn't think Lark will give him much shit for it.
"Robots?" he laughs. "And here I thought the terrible films made use of zombies and guitars."
Not that Pagan's seen many movies in that genre. But Paul had, and so he can just infer from what the man's told him. Chainsaws and broken records and guitars.
"Whose talking about films?" He shakes his head. "Obviously when you're facing your actual zombies, you use whatever's on hand, but I've never found guitars to be the most effective there. And it's a real shame to damage a good guitar."
"You say that now. When you go back home and then a year or so later get attacked by alien or something and I'll yet again be proved right about worlds that 'make sense' just being places where the thin illusion hasn't yet snapped and so you can believe that the nightmares in the corner of your eyes are just a product of your mind." He rubs his chin, contemplative. "Can you believe that a few prisons back they tried to bang me up with a headshrinker? They were singing a different tune when people started getting eaten."
"Well, unfortunately for you, if you're proven right, you'll never know about it," he points out. "So I'm going to stay with my theory right now that I won't live long enough for my world to get fucked."
"I never knew you were such an optimist." He shrugs. "And you never know, it could turn out we're actually from the same world. That would be a laugh. How much of one depending on the state of your prisons."
"You know the state of my prison. But if you end up there, I'll make sure you get the good treatment," he assures him. "Now, I need to go and see my excuse of a warden before he seeks me out."
"Mythical future where we're out of here, Pagan." He likes to assume that Pagan would manage to find an in between on the whole prison thing. He stretches. "And I think it's time for me to try to chase away a few more of those memories. I'll see you for lessons."
He pauses a moment. "And, you know, good luck." He's not going to say anything else on the topic, and he firmly isn't trying to narrow down specifics, but he knows what's motivated him the few times he's actually turned down casual hookups.
