"It's from Antimasque, real classy stuff. By their standards. Depending on what year it is, not much of it about anymore, which makes it extra special."
His opinion is that it reminds him of cordial but gets him drunk on the quicker side of things, so has basically everything worth having.
"Come settle in and let's open it, then," Taura tells him, releasing Fitz
and going to snag glasses for them. She'll let Fitz decide where he wants
to be at the moment. They can get drunk in any room of her cabin.
"Fine. A new temporary inmate, but otherwise nothing out of the
ordinary." She perches on the edge of the bed, taking the bottle and
pouring them each a glass before she joins him, sprawling on her side.
"Temps practically are an ordinary day, after so many months here."
"Yeah, I had a few temporary wardens. I don't believe I exchanged more than three words with any of them." He'd always been relieved not to be paired with Taura. Now, he'd rather risk the potential awkwardness of their names being stuck together on the Admiral's list rather than put up with having one warden.
"I try to exchange more than three words with my inmates. At least one
conversation. But I'm glad we never got matched up. It's nicer being a
refuge for you than supposedly responsible for you." She tries a sip of
her drink. "This is good."
"Yours clearly aren't as good at me at avoidance." Some might argue that it's not a skill to be proud of, but when you have a limited number Fitz feels he has a right. "Or they actually want something." He smiles, taking another drink of his own. "I'm glad you like it. I didn't exactly get to enjoy it at the time, but when I saw the bottle here it seemed like the perfect chance."
"A few people have wanted things. Norton makes long, elaborate lists of
requests for his wardens," Taura tells him with a grin. No one else has
ever quite so cheerfully acquiesced to a temp pairing with her. She likes
Norton.
Fitz laughs. "I can just imagine. Personally, I'm very self-sufficient, as you know, so it doesn't come up." It's not something he'd usually bring up, but whatever else, having an assigned warden provides a more solid wall between the fact of Taura's status.
"You don't have to be self sufficient all the time, you know." Taura tells
him, leaning in for a brief kiss. "I'm not going to make you talk about
anything, as if I even could, but I'll listen or help if you ever need it."
"What? You don't find my rugged independence the most unspeakably sexy part of my personality?" As ever, he finds his own jokes extremely funny. Fitz does have a self-sufficient streak, and an independent one, but he's more likely to pretend that doesn't than to hold them up as positives. "Anyway, I was just wondering if you've thought more about what you'll do as 'work' in your brave new world?" He'd rather listen to her than think about any of the stuff he doesn't want to talk about.
Taura just shakes her head at him, not really surprised by that response.
But she did say she wouldn't force him to talk about his feelings, and she
acquiesces to the change of subject. "Odd missions, probably. Rescues,
supply runs, that sort of thing."
"How do you sort of people get alerted to that stuff? Is there space bulletin boards with job opportunities?" He doesn't want to talk about his feelings, but he also does find this stuff genuinely interesting.
"I'll have to learn the systems when I go there, but back home, pretty
much. We put in bids for jobs when there were calls out for mercenaries.
We also had enough of a reputation that sometimes jobs sought us out rather
than the other way around."
Reputation, plus missions coming specially from Barrayar.
"I figure some of my jobs will come from Jedao and Fives, since I want to
help them even if I'm not fighting in the army proper."

"Thanks," she tells him, ruffling his hair. "What is it? Or do you want me to be surprised when I try it?"
