So. You're not doing him any favors by thinking it's your job to do whatever he asks and he doesn't have to think about whether it's gonna get you killed.
If he's giving the orders he's the one who has to think about how dangerous they are and whether you're expendable. Otherwise, he's the one who's going to fuck up real bad and have to live with that.
[It's a few hours before there's any response, when Fitz wakes up from something close enough to sleep to a moderate level of regret. And much steadier typing.]
Sorry about that. I'm sure someone has said that the invention of text was a mistake. While they were probably wrong in the specifics, there may have been something like a point.
I'd honor you as a scholar and a gentleman, but I'm pretty sure the ancient code says that's only fair play if you have a conversation with someone who's already very drunk.
[It's not too far; Yunlan'll be there in a few minutes, with a red box of hangover remedy pills labeled in scuffed gold characters. He raps a knuckle against Fitz's door, raising his voice so the amused tone will carry through the wood.]
As Fitz opens the door, he offers an obscene hand gesture to convey his deep appreciation. He's pretty sure he looks awful, which is an appropriate match to how he feels.
Fitz manages to catch it and then open it, not without fumbling but, as much as he does usually drink slightly less, it's not like this is the first time he's ended up like this.
"It's fine." Listless, but that was the point. All sensitive nerves to be appropriately numbed, more or less. He steps back, patting his pocket for a lighter. "D'you want something to drink? Juice. Going to have to restock."
When it's down to automatic responses, he tends more towards polite than he does when fully focused.
"Sure, juice would be fine," Yunlan says easily, catching the door with the toe of his boot. "Get yourself some too, hydration never hurts, et cetera."
"Yeah, yeah. Hair of the dog would be a bit much, so juice it is." He moves - carefully - to dig two bottles out from the cooler he keeps under the card table he'd repurposed for his 'parlor'. His cabin is still mostly his room from the TARDIS, but he's had the time to make adjustments for circumstances, and isn't particularly mired in sentiment about changing things.
"From the commissary, I think. So don't look too hard at the flavor." He might just have taken the bottles from there and filled them in the dining room, it's not high on the list of things to remember. He slouches in a chair, taking a drink before lighting up his cigarette.
"The first I could decorate to my own taste. Meaning without having to pay for anything."
When it comes to matters of taste, he clearly means comfort over some unified interior design. An impressive bed, doesn't exactly match the old fashioned wardrobe, or the warm, colorful carpet or somewhat random collection of lamps. He likes having stuff, and doesn't see a need to stop a chair from being covered with clothes or books and papers spreading from shelves to random stacks. The most carefully maintained area is his collection of music from every era, along with his guitar.
"It doesn't hum quite right." He shrugs. "But then, wouldn't want this ship in my head."
Yunlan clicks his tongue thoughtfully. "Aw, I don't know about that. Iris seems pretty attached -- not like I've got any kind of mental connection to the Barge, but it can't be that bad, right?" He waves a hand beside his head, trying to mime telepathic link.
The eclectic mess in the room is familiar and homey, and, frankly, less messy than his own apartment tends to get when Shen Wei's not helping him look after the place. He feels a certain fellow-feeling.
Fitz gives a him a look that has rather too much judgement, considering his current circumstances. "Is that supposed to be you mental bond? Anyway, and I say this in the most positive way, Iris is both insane and has a much more active form of telepathy. When I can't fully check who's knocking at the mental door, I prefer not to have them just popping in to look for the tea."
"Hey, they're intangible by definition. I'm doing my best!"
Chuckling, he tries another swig of the whatever-flavor-it-is drink. "And you do have a valid point about Iris. Lovely lady but I still haven't figured out how she makes her judgments. The Barge doesn't seem to be all that, uh, active telepathically, though, at least not for those of us who can't knock on its door."
"From my experiences with her outside the clink, I'm not sure how possible it is to understand how she makes her judgements. You just kind of have to live inside them. Or possibly die in them if the giant owls catch up." He raises a shoulder. "I hold on to believing it's not very active. It's the line that keeps me drinking only a reasonable amount."

"Not a bad place you've got," he adds casually, looking around. "Homey."
